Barack Obama - President Elect - what do you think?
So.....Barack Obama is in.
What do we all think?
He will be the 44th American President, to be sworn in on 20th January 2009 and is the first black president.
Personally, I think he seems like a pretty decent guy (not sure if decent is the right word to use when describing a politician
), a family man, someone who the people will be able to trust. I think he will be a welcome addition to the worlds leaders.
I was listening to Talk Sport (sad I know
) last night and they said that the biggest fear is that an assassination plot will already be in the making to stop Obama getting into the White House....
There have been comments from people like Rev Jesse Jackson saying it is the greatest achievement of a african ameraican so far, it was very emtional reading about Jesse Jackson's personal thoughts on the first Afro American President...what do you think?WARNINGWarning: This is an Old Thread

If people can get over the black thing then I am hopeful that the world will start to recover from the mire of Dubya. OK he's black - well mixed race - but is that really his defining characteristic? What about his politics!?
Anyways I would like to say congratulations President Elect Obama. And congratulations to both camps for running a comparatively clean and dirty tricks free campaign. Lets hope that not only is this a new dawn in the U.S. but a new dawn in politics in general. As you may be able to tell I have many things crossed here and for the first time in a long time the political future is looking a little bit brighter!

I am American but moved to the UK 14 years ago and have no intentions of going back. Despite that, it is still the place where I spent my formative years, I still have my passport (even if it has been joined by a UK one) and in some ways it will always be "home". I have never been a flag waver and I can't remember the last time I felt actively proud to be American, but today I do. :excited:

Sigh............... black President eh? In the many religous groups I am involved in there are a LOT of them, Witches, Christians, Muslims too who want him dead NOW! The witches coz of the witch hunt he "will" start, the Christians coz he "is" a muslim coz he is black and therefore MUST be and the Islamics coz he is black, might have beenan islamic but isn't now thus has gone against the Koran and thus must be destroyed.................All this hate for sweet sod all (shakes head in disgust at fellow man). All this and I haven't even begun about all the redneck arseholes in that group of muppets the KKK.
The question was asked about his religion. The person asking assumed that, as Obama was an "Arab" (?) he "had" to be Islamic. He reckoned that Obama would never "convert" to Christianity. Someone pointed out that the guy who was in office NOW, Mr Bush was NOT a Christian when he took office, he had never been inside a Church for any type of religous practice other than at Easter, thanks given and Christs Mass. When he was to swear himself in he HAD to go to a "Church" and "become" a Christian first...........................Ho hum says I.
I wish the poor guy all the best BUT..............Well. Although, if he stops the wonton murder of innocent lives in Iraq and other places, brings the troops home, stops spending BILLIONS on bullets and other munitions chasing an enemy much better equiped to deal with a long and costly engagement, America MIGHT then have the funds to do things properly for its "peepul"
Other than that I personally do not give a monkies chuff about America and it's politics, all I want is a hot water bottle and duvett and chocolate and kisses n cuddles coz I am dying very quickly.................

I'm very pleased with the result of the election. I was watching it closely and was feeling a bit scared that somehow Mc Cain and his pitbull with lipstick would make it.
Barack Obama is giving everyone hope, in and out of America. But dealing with the economical crisis and reparing what years of Bush's politics have damaged will be the worst job I can imagine. I wish him the best and good luck.

Now that this bloody cold has waned slightly and I can think without snot appearing, I rather agree with you Freya. If McCain had gotten in "we" would have been at war with every bugger in the East in a very short peiod of time. As for "The Pit Bull with lipstick", a neat name for her my dear, she shot herself in the foot with her spending $100,000, or however much, of campaign funds on SHOES and DRESSES after telling all the "poor" wifes out there she was "just the same as them"...................Ho friggin hum.

*Sigh* All this talk of assassination just because he's black (well mixed race) ... makes you sad, doesn't it?
Makes me think of the awesomely vitriolic Frankie Boyle on Mock the Week: 'We've had Bush for eight years and only now are people talking about assassination? Where were you when we needed you?!'

I think it's so exciting- this could be a real turning point for America and the west everything he represents demonstrates a change in attitudes. Of course it's important that he's Black this is a major historical moment!
However because I'm cynical and twisted I can't help thinking; his policies are good,he makes sense and uses reason, he's charismatic, he's inspired the nation and he's fit- somethings wrong! It's all too perfect! Does anyone else expect him to peel off his face revealing some horrible monster bush/cheney hybrid thing?
