Question for Photographers and Make up Artists
So part of my career change means I am considering all options. As I mentioned, plumbing is one thing I am considering, but another one is being a Make Up Artist - specifically one that works on photoshoots, TV, weddings etc. I just wondered - photographers, do you use make up artists? How often? What's the going rate? What do you expect? Etc
Make up artists - how did you get into it? How long did it take you? And a million different other questions!
Thanks guys! At a real crossroads here and no clue what to do :cry:WARNINGWarning: This is an Old Thread

Have a nose into what your local college is doing on the Beauty and Treatment side of things, some just do Aromatherapy, others do make-up/make over courses, unless you can tell if some one is a spring, summer, autumn or a winter, I would try and get some training done. I use Louise as a makeup person when needed coz she has done makeup on a course. I would not use anyone who had not had some training in the art coz it IS an art.

you would of been best trying to get a Christmas temp job on a makeup counter like MAC, i know few people who work/worked there and non of them did a make up or beauty course ( waste of 2 year ) and the company will send you on courses and you will learn as you work
more importantly you will earn while learning and get up to a professional standard faster than doing a collage course, you are also not tying yourself down if you think further down the line you are not into it rather than shelling out money for the course ( depending on your age dunno what it is now for collage )

Hey hun....i trained in all aspects, beauty, nails and make up.
I then went on to specialise in theatrical, fantasy and special effects make up.
Its something i'd wanted to do since i was little and its still a real passion.
I've also worked on the make up counters so i can tell you both sides of the story...because despite what they may tell you, most, not all, but most of the girls on there have had no training at all and are just sales girls with targets.....this is usually counter specific and i know of 4 major brands that give no training in how to apply make up, skin tone, colouring ir any of that...they simply give product training.
If make up is something you really want to do there are courses out there and you can get good qualification and build a portfolio at the same time....you always have the bonus of work placements leading to a full time job afterwards or colleges usually put you forward for jobs while you train so you gain some experience.
I've been doing it for 6 years now and i love it......pm me if you have any questions hun....apologies for the waffle! xx

Ive only ever paid 2 make-up artists, the other few worked tfcd because we both needed images for our portfolios, the other two charged an hourly rate, i think one charged £20 and the other £40 but they where local so didnt charge travel but you should deffinatly charge its going to take away some of your profits from doing the actualy make up.

Hi
I do use MUA's for shoots - depending on the assignment depends on who I use.
It can range from TFCD from the MUA payment through to £'s per hour.
Check out How To Become A Model - Modeling Portfolios - Fashion, Glamour and Photographic Models - they have a specific MUA section.
You are more than welcome to come into my studio to try out some stuff...I will happily arrange a model for you to work on too.Deb
