    Default New to Edinburgh

    Hello!

I recently joined the community and have been poking around for a couple of weeks, but I wanted to properly introduce myself.
I started the burlesque troupe at my university in New York, USA, and have been performing for about a year and a half with them. Next year I well be a visiting international student at the University of Edinburgh. It will be my first time in the UK, and I will be living there the entire year. I don't want to leave burlesque behind in the states! if anyone has suggestions for classes to take, shows to see, etc. while in Scotland I would really appreciate it.

    Thanks!
    Lilli V

    Hi Lilli,

I am also from the States (seems like a past life now though!) and now live in Edinburgh. You are going to love it! You are really lucky in that Edinburgh is home to the Academy of Burlesque and Cabaret who are the best teachers in the UK, and as such we have quite a thriving burlesque scene as well. Who knows what will be on for shows when you arrive, but I've no doubt there will be plenty to keep you occupied.

As Queen Bea has said, you've chosen well if you are looking for Burlesque. Dancebase is the place to go for the Academy of Burlesque and Cabaret, and there are a whole bunch of nights as well!

From the laid back afternoon atmosphere of Miss Fitz-Post Modern Mixers, to the dark cabaret stylings of Itsy's Kabarett, and the Glamorous Evening's at Va Va Voom.

There is also the new kids on the block of the Bump and Grind of the Cat's Meow, the rock based shows of Look's That Kill, and the carefree tongue in cheek kitsch of the Captain's Follies, and the Guilty Lily's Sugar Lounge.

Basically, you are not too short on options!

    Hi,

I agree with Iolair, Edinburgh is amazing for dancing and performing burlesque! I've attended Dancebase's Burlesque beginners and improvers and recommend both, maybe improvers since you said that you have performed before?

When it comes to clubs and events, you also have Glasgow with a wide range of clubs; Club Noir, Dead Famous, Stardust presents, La Cheetah, Movers & Shakers, Red Door Burlesque, Enchante, Rockaburley.. London Burlesque week is also worth a visit!

I haven't been to any burlesque clubs in the states but the british scene has generally more theatre, parody, wit and cheakyness, which I love. A question in return, I'm planning to go to New York this summer, any clubs you recommend?

    Good luck!
    The best,
    Micha xx

Thank you so much! I'm very excited to be in Edinburgh this fall, and I can't wait to explore the burlesque scene once I'm settled at school!

    Micha:
As far as burlesque in New York goes, I can give you the names/websites of some clubs I know...I haven't been to many of them (most clubs are 21+ so I'm not old enough), but I've heard from friends who have gone. Boston also has a great burlesque scene, which is where I tend to go to shows, if you have time to pop down.

    For NYC:

my favorite is The Slipper Room: ( - The Slipper Room ) because it is connected with the New York School of Burlesque.
I've also heard good things about Le Scandal: (Le Scandal, New York City's longest-running variety burlesque show!) but like many other burlesque clubs in NYC it's 21+, so I am too young to attend.
there's also Starshine Burlesque (http://www.starshineburlesque.com/) and Sweet and Nasty (Sweet & Nasty Burlesque) which both use the same space downtown on different nights.

There are also a lot of places to see burlesque that pop up throughout the year. Pinchbottom Burlesque does shows fairly frequently, and they're very funny! I love them. (Pinchbottom: Themed Burlesque Entertainments)
Also, the 2010 New York Burlesque Festival is going to be 30 Sept- 3 October. If that matches your travel dates it's definitely worth going to!

    Cheers,
    Lilli

There's also The Freaky Brides (myspace.com/thefreakybrides, http://www.facebook.com/group.php?gid=27921682251, http://www.facebook.com/thefreakybrides) at "Confusion Is Sex" which I think is an event at somewhere called "The Bongo Club" in Edinburgh.
