I didn't go and, although I have to admit I'm not a particular fan of Club Noir, I was surprised at the negative reviews that have been turning up - particularly on edfinge.com.

Most folk have a great time at Noir and I'm always happy to recommend it as a night out in Glasgow as the music is fab and there are some real gems amongst the troupe (KarneyDoll & Morgan LaFaye in particular never fail to please) but the last couple of Fringe events have suffered from reports of being too crowded and the acts varying wildly.

That determination to fill a large venue in order to be the biggest event can only hurt the production values. I think, when you're performing in an environment where there's 3000 other shows on at the same time and a number of them are cabaret/burlesque shows by the best of the best, you have to up your game considerably - bigger is not alway better and I always feel that the larger an event is; the harder it is to maintain the charm and intimacy that a cabaret event should have. La Clique gets it just right - the Spiegeltent is a great venue and they play to around 200 people per night for 30 days (that's 6000 happy punters), there's not a weak act amongst them and their compere is charming, concise and does his job so well that the evening flies by and is over way too soon.

If you get the chance, go see La Clique, The Wau Wau Sisters, Sideshow, The Ceasar Twins, And the Devil May Drag You Under and the fantastic Bongo Club Cabaret - they're all examples of perfect Fringe cabaret shows. You might even see me performing at a couple of them!

thanks rufus, youve kind said exactly what i was thinkin its far too big and intimacy etc goes, as ive said previously ive been to the speigiltent on many occasions since it started coming to the fringe and have seen many of the acts youve named plus more and i think its exactly right that you have to up your game, are you going to tease on friday at studio24????

BRILLIANT, well i hope to introduce myself to you all. ive just read the reviews and all are spot on, im glad it wasnt just me and my frends who thought this abt last nite but now i think of it it did get less busy very quickly, and we actually eventually GOT SEATS.sadly it was a rip off and i think this will dent CN reputation a great deal, my frend laura was actually burlesqing for the first time and i felt i dissapointed for her and only hope she's not put off for tease on friday.

Oh gosh. I've just read the reviews Rufus linked to. I must say, the reviews have surprised me too.

A friend saw the Club Noir Edinburgh show last year and communicated a similar response to those posted online about this year's event... but given Club Noir's prestige and experience, I thought it may have been a one-off.

It's sad to hear that the show may not have as much oomph as the audience were anticipating Perhaps the management team had some last-minute issues arise?

This said, many of the reviewers seem to have a good idea of what a great burlesque show is - so it seems that one bad show is treated accordingly and is not damaging the credibility of burlesque generally.

I'm interested to hear more from the performer who did the "rape" act. I'd like to hear whether, indeed, the act was intended to depict such a violent assault and, if so, precisely what the artistic motivation behind the piece was. In many ways I hope that the reviewer misunderstood the piece.

    Hi Beatrix

I *personally* would not like to have paid money and received a 'rape' act passed off as entertainment. That said, I agree, perhaps if we can find out more about the act it might be more illuminating than just reading what reviewers said?

As a complete newbie to this, I'd like to ask, ARE there any subjects that y'awl would avoid like a dose of tertiary syphillis for your routines? Or is everything fair game?

Precisely. There are always 2 sides (or more!) to every story and it would be unfair to jump to conclusions without hearing other perspectives. x

I really wanted to go to Teaze but I'm an idiot and didn't check the dates to get the time off work. So I'm not only working on that day, but the day after too. Pffffffft.
