Gypsy: burlesque film and workshops in Edinburgh
As part of DANCE:FILM 09, Scotland’s Dance Film Festival and collaboration between Dance Base and Filmhouse, below are details on a screening of the original version of 'Gypsy' and two burlesque workshops, the first taught by Lily White and the second by Viva Misadventure of MoB Academy.
Gypsy (film)
The story of Gypsy Rose Lee
Mon 25 May | 18.00 | £6.50 (£4.90)
Filmhouse, 88 Lothian Road, Edinburgh
A rare opportunity to see the original Gypsy, the story of the life and times of the queen of Burlesque, Gypsy Rose Lee. Regarded as the talentless one in the family by a pushy showbiz mother, Louise Hovick was always in the shadow of her vaudeville star young sister June. But when June decides that she’s had enough, Mama Rose’s attention is turned to Louise who becomes the striptease legend Gypsy Rose Lee.

Let Me Entertain You (workshop)
Sun 24 May | 13.00 – 15.00 | £14 (£11)
Dance Base, 14-16 Grassmarket, Edinburgh
Although her career began in the 1930s, the name Gypsy Rose Lee is still synonymous with burlesque. She was an expert in knowing how to leave her audience wanting more, and put the tease firmly into strip. This seductive workshop will teach you the elements of a traditional burlesque striptease routine and for the finale will create an act based on Gypsy’s theme song, “Let Me Entertain You”. No experience necessary and no nudity required. Wear comfortable clothing that you can dance in and please bring gloves, a feather boa, a coat or dressing gown and a bra.

You Gotta Have A Gimmick (workshop)
Sun 24 May | 15.30 – 17.30 | £14 (£11)
Dance Base, 14-16 Grassmarket, Edinburgh
We invite you to come and play the burlesque dancer, elevated froma chorus girl ‘bumping in the back row’ to burlesque starlet. Using music from the classic film Gypsy, this workshop, suitable for all ages and abilities, and open to both males and females, takes its inspiration from the American burlesque houses of the 1920s. We will create a group dance routine with shimmies, shakes, quivers and the inimitable burlesque bump and grind. Character work will be integral to this class, where tongue-in-cheek humour will go hand in hand with classic burlesque dance moves. Please wear comfortable clothes you can move in and bring small heels.
